Janessa Graves

Biography

Dr. Janessa M. Graves, PhD MPH is an Affiliate Associate Research Professor in the WSU College of Nursing and Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine in School of Medicine at University of Washington (UW). She is the Director of the WWAMI Rural Health Research Center and the Co-Director of Outreach at the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center (HIPRC) at UW. She also serves as Program Director for the Occupational Health Services Research Training Program with the UW Northwest Center for Occupational Health and Safety (NWCOHS).

Research Interests and Methodological Strengths

Dr. Graves is a health services researcher with expertise in access to healthcare services among rural and underrepresented populations. Her work informs state and federal health policies to improve access to and quality of healthcare services for high-needs populations and will ultimately reduce health inequities in underserved communities.

Dr. Graves’ training in Health Services Research included emphases in Evaluation Sciences and Occupational Health Services Research and she completed a two-year NIH-funded postdoctoral fellowship on pediatric injury research at the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center at the University of Washington. Dr. Graves’ expertise includes evaluations and comparisons of healthcare costs, utilization, and outcomes as they relate to healthcare policy changes, disparities in healthcare, and variation in treatment. Recently, Dr. Graves conducted an interrupted time-series analysis to evaluate the impact of a statewide policy on healthcare utilization within the Washington State workers’ compensation system. In addition, Dr. Graves has extensive survey research methods experience and has conducted statewide, regional, and national surveys of institutions and healthcare providers. She enjoys the creative use of existing data to conduct applied health services research, as well as using interdisciplinary approaches to answering important public health questions.
